A Complete Guide on How to Become the Best Nutritionist that You can Be

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Nutritionist, dietitian, food expert – no matter which term you wish to
apply to it, it all boils down to the same thing. A nutritionist should be
an expert at what he or she does.

And the main focus of the profession is promoting good health through
proper diet and nutrition. As such, you need to be an expert in food and
everything that involves nutrients, modified diets and fulfilling a
patient’s nutritional needs.

It’s basically an overall health care which focuses again, on food and
nutrition.

Top Tips on How to become the Best Nutritionist

Just as it is with every other profession, there are certain things that
you need to keep in mind if you wish to become an expert at food and
nutrition. Take a look at the following tips:

1. Educate yourself.
How can you be a Registered Dietitian, for example, if you will not get
proper education? If you want to become a professional nutritionist or
dietitian, the first thing that you need to work on is earning a degree.

Don’t get sucked in by taking an RD degree from a run-of-the-mill school –
make sure that the educational institution that you will enrol in is
reputable. Check the school’s accreditation and determine the number of
hours of internship required by your state for you to become a
full-fledged Registered Dietitian.

2. Pursue a higher degree of education.
When you’re an RD, you can either work in a research facility, a hospital
or another institute which requires the services of a food and nutrition
expert. If you want to advance your career, it’s a good idea to pursue a
higher level of education – like taking up a Master’s or PhD in nutrition.

This will not just allow you to earn more, but also pursue bigger things
and advance greatly in your profession.

3. Love what you do – and excel in it.
The food that man is consuming is constantly evolving. By being aware of
what is happening around you, having a love for what you are doing and
excelling in your field of food and nutrition – you can become the best
nutritionist that you can be.

4. Be a role model.
Finally, make sure that you are practicing what you preach. How can you
become a good role model as a nutritionist if your students or your peers
see you eating a relatively unhealthy diet?

By following these tips, you are bound to become the best nutritionist
that you can be and excel in this particular field of study.

5 Foods That Will Help Improve Your Mood This Holiday Season

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Halloween is about up. Which means the Holiday season pretty much here. The Holidays tend to bring a lot of stress into people’s lives. All the plans that need to be made, the juggling of schedules, the gift buying and giving, the crowded malls, the gobbling turkeys, and all those darn Santa hats.

What else tends to happen around the holidays for most people are diet and workouts suffer. Bad nutrition and not working out will lead you to be a very unpleasant Mr. or Mrs. Scrooge.

And with everything else going on top of that…

That’s why I stress the importance of good eating. Not good eating in the way of eating BBQ spare ribs

everyday tastes good, but good eating in the way of staying healthy with your nutrition and only cheating on your diet less then 10% of the time.

This is what will keep your mood up. Be happy! The holidays are supposed to be fun. Don’t get stressed. So here are 5 foods that you can eat to help improve your mood. And they aren’t just for the Holiday season either; year round these foods can make you feel good.

Food #1

Spinach.

Calorie for calorie this green leafy veggie provides more nutrients then almost every other food on Earth. Scientifically proven to help protect the brain from age-related declines. A healthy brain will make you happy. Also loaded with the vitamin Folate, which has been linked to depression if the levels are too low.

Did you know Subway has spinach? Replace your sandwich with the nutrient-dense spinach from that nutrient-less romaine lettuce next time. Always opt for a spinach-based salad when you can. Your mood will thank you.

Food #2

Dark Chocolate.

No! I am not talking about Snickers or Milky Way Bars either. The chocolate you want to look for is ‘high cocoa-content dark chocolate’. 60 percent cocoa or above. 70 percent or higher are the best but it is hard to find. But don’t pig out on it either because of the palmitic acid type of fat in it. But chocolate has been proven to release endorphins and will boost serotonin levels, which will give you a happier you. But again keep the intake low—no more then a couple ounces a week.

Food #3

Walnuts.

This nut contains more Omega-3 fatty acids then any other. You need Omega-3’s in your diet. One of the many benefits of Omega-3’s is that they support brain function. They have been used in depression studies and have helped considerably. Your brain and mood go hand-in-hand. They don’t call Omega-3 fats ‘brain food’ for nothing.

Food #4

Salmon.

I’m only talking wild here, not the farm-raised. Wild salmon contains probably the most Omega-3 fatty acids in it then any other food. Notice how we’re coming back to Omega-3’s? The wild kinds of salmon who dine on their oceanic friends are full of this wonderful fatty acid. However the farm-raised kinds are fed grains, not exactly the kind of grub you’ll find in the ocean and rivers where salmon live. The result is a fish that produces very little Omega-3 fats and produces a lot more of the inflammatory Omega-6 fats. We already get more then enough of this fat in our diets. So stick with the Wild Salmon and improve your mood and health.

Food #5

Eggs.

And yes I mean the whole egg. I wrote an entire article on the benefits of this food. For starters, it is without question the absolute best whole protein food you can eat. People are worried about the cholesterol and fat though. But you see eggs contain Choline, which is a B Complex vitamin that many people will be low on if they avoid foods like eggs. Choline to be ‘used’ appropriately by the body needs to be in the presence of fat. Eggs are perfect because of the fat already naturally occurring. Without getting too scientific choline is connected to memory and thought- both very important for affecting mood.

Fighting Fatty Foods For Fat Loss Success

Monday, November 9th, 2009

It might be an obvious statement, but the foods we put into our bodies fall into one of two categories – either it’s good for you or it’s not. If we Americans continue along the path of eating foods in the latter category, then being overweight will become the norm.
Fat cats and fat people are normal, weight loss needs to happen to get thin

Foods that cause us to gain weight have common characteristics. Before putting something in your body, think about if it falls into one of the following categories:

• High in calories
• Lots of sugar
• High in fat
• Lots of salt or sodium
• Lots of ingredients
• Little to no nutritional value

I recently came across the website “This Is Why You’re Fat”, this is why you are fat, bacon cheeseburger, extra sauce, which serves as the perfect of example of why obesity is such a problem in our country. The site reveals photos of foods laden with fat, sugar and sodium that people actually ingest. Although these are ingredients that appeal to our tastes – and things every fast food restaurant, cookie maker, donut baker and ice cream parlor exploit to reel in business – these very things are our pitfalls when tackeling our weight loss goals.

If you want to become lean and healthy, you need to fight the cravings for the fried, sweet and salty. You can start today by avoiding these “bad” foods:

• Fast food fast food kills you and makes you fat and unhealthy
• High calorie/fat condiments (dressing, gravy, mayonnaise, cream, etc.)
• Sweets (cookies, candy, ice cream, etc.)
• Soda (including diet drinks, which even with no calories increase your appetite for “bad” things)
• Special coffee drinks (Regular coffee is ok, but add 200 to 500 calories of cream or sugar and all nutritional value is lost) Special coffees, and cappuccinos will make you gain weight and be obese with diabetes
• Fried foods
• “Fat Free” packaged foods (You take all the fat, sugar or sodium out of a food and you need more of the other two to make it taste good. Don’t fall for deceptive packaging. Heidi Klum fat free food makes you fat with added sugar and sodium
• “White” foods (All the nutrition has been taken out of processed foods like rice, pasta and bread. In addition, these foods cause an instant blood sugar surge can wreak havoc on your body’s insides.)

This is not a comprehensive list nor will eating these things every once in a while hurt you, but if you are eating these types of foods every day, you will not succeed in your weight loss goals.

In addition, you will probably not feel as good as you should. Eating “bad” foods can cause mood swings, energy swings, headaches, nausea, cravings for more bad food, stomach problems, indigestion and other daily disturbances. diarrhea is bad, eating fat foods and processed will make you fat with indigestion

If we want to lead healthy, productive lives, we need to start replacing the “bad” foods with “good” foods. Additional weight does not fit into an equation for healthy living and the key is to start analyzing your diet now, before fat starts creeping onto your thighs and stomach. To examine how well you’re eating, record these simple things:

• What do you eat?
• When do you eat?
• How much do you eat?

Start your diet makeover slowly, gradually replacing the “bad” foods with the “good.” If you replace one item per week, in a month’s time, you will notice how much better you feel. Keep in mind, you can eat a lot more “good” foods then you can “bad” foods before going over your daily calorie requirement.

Foods That Make People Fat

The Grind of A Diet Versus the Habit of Your Diet—Nutrition Made Simpler [ARTICLE]

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

My opinion of diets is not very good. I think they suck. 99.9% of them. If someone is trying to lose weight the last thing I recommend is for somebody to go on a diet.
Diets suck! No more diet for you!

Why? You see most diets do nothing but cause you to lose weight. It’s a serious problem. I know your asking yourself ‘…but don’t I want to lose weight?’ Yes and no. I’ve probably confused you by now. You see, you don’t want to lose weight, you want to lose fat!

When you lose weight you are in an all out quest to make the scale move down. With no regards to the most important thing in the world when it comes to fat loss—your metabolism. Diets usually cause a loss of weight, but they make your hard earned muscle tissue shrink and cause you to lose a lot of water. Muscle and body water levels are two of the most important factors when it comes to metabolism.
The case of the yo-yo diet, never ends for weight loss hell

Now from a nutritional standpoint you need to get a good, healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats in your diet to rev your metabolism up. Now I might confuse you a little more. I have 2 definitions of diets. 1.) The food you eat is your diet. 2.) The fad things that you ‘go on’ to lose weight is a diet. Now you want to skip #2 in favor of #1. And you want to make #1 a lifestyle and not a chore. You need to make #1 a habit in your life. Just like Grey’s Anatomy, or Oprah, or College Football Saturday’s. Then, and only then, will you to start to get the ball rolling towards the body of your dreams.

Let’s use two people as an example. I’m sure you are quite familiar with one or the other. Maybe one is you, or someone you know. Person A we will call her Adrian. Adrian is a person who goes on a variety of diets, whatever is the flavor of the month at the time. The reason she does this is because she continues to lose weight on them. But as soon as she stops the diet the weight comes back on. Sometimes more than before. You may know this as Yo-Yo dieting. The reason she stops the diet in the first place is because she stops seeing the results. Which usually means her metabolism is running on empty and her body’s lean muscle tissue has been eaten away.

Now Adrian is angry and the drive that was there when she started the diet is gone, because she is putting in all this effort and getting nothing in return. And most of the time when she reaches this point in her diet, she starts getting sick a lot and starts to feel little aches and pains everywhere. This is because a slow metabolism and poor nutrition will lead to a decreased immune system.

So this is the point Adrian decides to ditch the diet, and go back to her ways before the diet. Then a few months down the line when Adrian has put the weight back on and usually more she finds a new diet to go on, and the cycle continues on and on. However, this isn’t a problem for person #2, we’ll call him Donnie. Donnie found out early on in life that limiting his food intake led to poor performances in everything from school, sports, job, and life.

He focuses on eating nutrient dense foods throughout the day and drinking plenty of water. He doesn’t let himself get hungry so he feeds himself with good food choices every 2-4 hours eating at least 5 times a day.

It isn’t a hassle for him either. He knows it’s more of a hassle if he skips a meal or puts junk in his system. That is when he starts feeling bad inside and out. He rarely is ever sick, and maintains a high level of lean muscle tissue and low body fat year round.
eating healthy is awesome!

Now both of those people and scenarios were made up. But I have known quite a few people on both sides of those fences. It is all about choosing between A Diet, and Your Diet.

Remember what A Diet does? Weight loss- plateau- frustration- anger- failure- weight gain-continuing cycle.

Your Diet results in: Fat loss- increased metabolism- lean muscle tissue- habit- lifestyle- body you want.

It is not rocket science. Its just nutrition made simpler for you.

Columbus Bootcamp Instructor tells you how to get results from your weight loss program

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I have helped a whole lot of people get into the best shape of their lives. Weather they wanted to lose weight/body fat, improve conditioning, performance, energy levels, or just feel better overall I have done it. So I know what it takes for people to lose unwanted body fat and look better naked faster than most. A big reason for this is the fact that I incorporate nutrition along with exercise. A lot of trainers are all about exercise and don’t give or have a nutritional system in place. Nutrition is by far the most important aspect in the fat loss game. But when combined with exercise your results will be even more profound. I’m going to share some things with you today that must be in place before you start a fitness and nutrition program.

So how do I manage to help my client’s get the results they seek? It’s not just my incredible nutrition and bootcamp system. It works, yes. But you have to be able to start. That’s the most important aspect. If you never start, you will never see results. After you start you need to stick with it. So it really comes down to goals. Making them, following through with them, and achieving them.

Before I start with the process needed to set goals, I know a lot of you will stop reading now. But let me stress, that goal setting is not a useless, time-wasting thing. The most successful people in life will set goals, daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. And I’m not just talking about weight loss; I’m talking overall success in life– Business, family, friends, social, money, fitness, and fun! Goals allow you to plan for roadblocks, and give you your map to success. Without a map you will get lost. That’s why most people give up on their New Year’s resolution soon after the New Year– They have no map. So let’s start, shall we?

WHY- WHAT REASON ARE YOU DOING THIS?

NO- You can’t just say ‘ you want to lose weight’. That is unacceptable. If you come to me, I already know that. I need to know the real reason. I need to know why you are going to all of sudden start a fitness and nutrition program and commit to it, when you haven’t been able to in the past.

Everybody wants to feel good about themselves, and look sexy. It’s probably the #1 motivator of people out there (although it should be getting healthy). Most people want to look better to the opposite sex. It’s human nature.

So write out the real reason you want to do this. ‘I want to lose weight because ______”. It can be any reason really. You want to fit into a pair of jeans you haven’t been able to for years. You want to be bikini ready. You want to lose that gut. Your getting married. Your high school reunion is coming up. You want to look better for your spouse. And the list goes on and on.

It all starts with the WHY. Get that down and everything after that is easier.

Women can’t control hunger as good as men

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Found this interesting article here. Very interesting.

Study: Women less able to suppress hunger than men
Buzz UpSendSharePrint
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer – Mon Jan 19, 6:18 pm ET
WASHINGTON – Faced with their favorite foods, women are less able than men to suppress their hunger, a discovery that may help explain the higher obesity rate for females, a new study suggests. Researchers trying to understand the brain’s mechanisms for controlling food intake were surprised at the difference between the sexes in brain response.
Gene-Jack Wang of Brookhaven National Laboratory and colleagues were trying to figure out why some people overeat and gain weight while others don’t.
They performed brain scans on 13 women and 10 men, who had fasted overnight, to determine how their brains responded to the sight of their favorite foods. They report their findings in Tuesday’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“There is something going on in the female,” Wang said in a telephone interview, “the signal is so much different.”
In the study, participants were quizzed about their favorite foods, which ranged from pizza to cinnamon buns and burgers to chocolate cake, and then were asked to fast overnight.
The next day they underwent brain scans while being presented with their favorite foods. In addition, they used a technique called cognitive inhibition, which they had been taught, to suppress thoughts of hunger and eating.

Bad News Bowl of Veggies

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

It’s just about impossible to gain weight just by eating veggeis. I mean seriously, you’d have to eat a LOT of ‘em.

BUT…

Salads are a different story altogether. Why is it that every time people want to get rid of their belly fat they break out the salad bowls and start eating like a rabbit?

Thing is, MOST salads people eat are loaded with fat and calories. It’s as if people think bacon, cheese and ranch dressing suddenly have amazing fat burning properties when they’re on top of a couple of carrots and broccoli.

Look, you probably don’t really want to know how much damage you did the last time you ate “healthy” and went to the salad bar for lunch.

But what’s done is done. Here are the tips you need to remember the next time you order one. They are from the Head of R & D at Prograde Nutrition and creator of the Metabolism Makeover program, registered dietitian Jayson Hunter:

1) Ask for the dressing on the side and dip the tongs of your fork in the dressing and THEN pick up some salad. It gives you just enough flavor and keeps your calorie intake under control.

2) Choose a salad that has grilled protein in it such as chicken or fish. Remember, it should be GRILLED and not fried.

3) Sorry, leave off the cheese and bacon bits. You know why ;-)

PS – The sales ends TOMORROW nigh!

Remember, Prograde Nutrition is currently having a BIG 10.9% off everything January Celebration Sale to celebrate the New Year and the fact they are now shipping to the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
